Noriko - The Artist Behind Commander-R ‘08

Japanese people are very artistic. How were you drawn to art?
When I first saw a book on American Fantasy Art that featured covers, I became very awed and emotional. I thought it would be fantasic to draw like that.

What is the typical way you approach a project?
Most of my drawings are from stories, so I start by reading. From those stories, I will usually develop an image of what I want to draw.

What is the most important skill for an artist?
Having a good imagination is very important. This helps to create an atmosphere that you are comfortable working in. Also, keeping the drawing in proper perspective is important.

Where do you get inspiration?
From stories and other drawings. Mostly from images in my mind or memories and feelings.

What is your favorite game character?
I like Wanda from Shadow of the Colossus.

What is the difference between Japanese and American game art?
It seems that Japanese art is done more in the pursuit of beauty and American art is done more in the pursuit of realism.

Who is your favorite artist?
I would have to say Jon Foster. He is a great science fiction artist.

What is the most challenging thing to paint?
At this early point in my career, the most challenging thing for me is really in every drawing, creating the proper atmosphere. Atmosphere and perspective are very difficult to create. Keeping proper perspective is something that I aways strive for and it’s very challenging.
